Besides, separate metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on the day put deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 energy affairs adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on a four-day聽 remand for interrogation in a murder case and sent former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque to jail in a separate murder case.
The news of the arrest and remand for interrogation came when Awami League leaders, former ministers and lawmakers, police officers, and other administration officials were facing criminal cases across the country following the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led AL government amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
RAB-1 media officer Md Mahfuzur Rahman said that they arrested Mazharul at about 4:00pm on Wednesday in a case lodged with Baliadangi police station over extortion and issuing death threats.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider put Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on a four-day remand for interrogation in a case filed over the death of Md Sumon Sikder during job quota reform protests in Dhaka鈥檚 Badda on July 19.
The court passed the order responding to a police plea seeking the court鈥檚 permission to take him under their custody for 10 days for interrogation in the case.
Earlier in the day, the police produced him before the court, a day after his arrest at Gulshan in Dhaka, said police inspector Asaduzzaman.
On August 20, the victim鈥檚 mother Masuma filed the murder case with Badda Police Station against Hasina, Tawfiq-e-Elahi and 178 others.
Tawfiq-e-Elahi was arrested Tuesday night.
Former law minister Anisul Hoque, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, adviser to Sheikh Hasina Salman F Rahman, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni and others were also accused in the case.
Meanwhile, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider sent former IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque to jail in a case filed over the killing of trader Abdul Wadud in Dhaka鈥檚 New Market area on July 19.
The court passed the order when Shahidul was produced before the court following the completion of his seven-day remand.
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him on September 3.
On July 19, trader Abdul Wadud was killed in a shooting incident in front of gate 1 of New Market.
On August 21, a case was filed against 130 people including former PM Sheikh Hasina, former road, transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader and former IGP Shahidul Hoque.
Former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former education affairs minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury and former jute and textiles affairs minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak were also named as accused in the case.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha, referring to sources at Police Headquarters, reported that former additional attorney general barrister Md Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and Gazipur city AL鈥檚 advisory council member Riaz Mahmud were arrested by the police at a location in Jhenaidah district while they had been trying to cross the border illegally.
The duo was accused in two separate cases filed with Adabor Police Station in Dhaka and Bason Police Station in Gazipur.
RAB-3 media officer Foyzul Islam said that they also arrested Md Jahangir Jamaddar, the assistant private secretary to former shipping minister Shajahan Khan, at Moghbazar in the capital.
Jahangir was arrested in a murder case filed with Madaripur Sadar Police Station on August 26, he said.
Shajahan Khan is currently in jail over the killing of Abdul Motalib, 14, in the capital鈥檚 Dhanmandi on August 4.
