Rapid Action Battalion on Wednesday arrested the private car driver of Ajmeri Osman, son of late Jatiya Party lawmaker Nasim Osman and a nephew of former Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman, in connection with the case of killing Tanwir Muhammad Taqi.

The arrestee is Jamshed Sheikh.

RAB-11 commander Colonel Tanvir Mahmud Pasha said that RAB arrested Jamshed, who was ‘directly involved’ in the murder, at Mirpur in Dhaka at about 4:45am on Wednesday.

With the latest arrest, RAB members have so far arrested four people since Sunday over the much-talked-about murder of Taqi, who was found dead in Narayanganj 11 years ago.

Of the three other accused, the elite force arrested Md Shafayet Hossain Shipon and Mamun Mia at Chasara and Kalibazar areas in Narayanganj on Sunday and another accused, Kajol Hawlader, at the capital’s Dhanmondi on Monday, RAB said in a press release on Tuesday night.

The three accused were produced before a court in Narayanganj on Wednesday and the court placed Shipon, Mamun and Kajol on a six-day remand for interrogation for proper investigation into the case.

Meanwhile, family members of Md Shafayet Hossain Shipon and Mamun Mia in separate press conferences at Narayanganj Press Club, claimed that they were innocent and demanded their release.

Addressing a recent event, Taqi’s father Rafiur Rabbi said that two murder suspects, including Sawkat Bhramar, made statements before a court on November 12, 2013, when they had said that Ajmeri Osman planned and executed the murder.

Almost a year after Taqi’s murder, the draft of a RAB probe report got leaked in the media, revealing the involvement of 11 people, including Ajmeri Osman, in the killing.

According to the probe findings, Ajmeri not only masterminded the murder of the bright teenage boy in Narayanganj, but also directly took part in it.

Directed by him, his accomplices followed Taqi and forcefully took him to Ajmeri’s ‘torture centre’ at the Winner Fashion on Allama Iqbal Road on March 6, 2013.

Later that night, Ajmeri and his cohorts beat and strangled the 17-year-old boy to death.

The victim’s body was then put into a sack and taken to Charargop area in Ajmeri’s car.

On March 7, the killers took the body to Kumudini Jora Khal by a boat and dumped it in the Sitalakhya River between 1:00am and 1:30am.

Taqi’s body was recovered from the river the next day, according to the findings, reported by various media outlets.
