Professor MA Faiz has resigned from his position as the chair of the expert panel on health sector reforms formed by the interim government on September 3.
The former director general of the Directorate of Health Services Faiz submitted his resignation letter to the health secretary on Friday evening, only 10 days after the formation of the committee, showing personal grounds.
The expert panel has been formed to propose necessary reforms, improve the quality of medical services, and strengthen the structure of the health system.
Faiz said that he resigned due to his personal reasons, as he felt unable to continue fulfilling his responsibilities.
‘I have resigned only for personal reasons. I don’t believe anyone else wouldn’t be able to go ahead with the reform process,’ he said over the phone.
On September 3, the Ministry of Health formed a 12-member expert panel headed by MA Faiz to address necessary reforms of the country’s healthcare system, improve the quality of medical services, and strengthen the healthcare structure.
Since its formation, the committee has faced criticism for including only specialist doctors, without involving public health, nutrition, or population experts.
The Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, a Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed organisation, officially rejected the committee, among others, at a press conference.
Experts suggested that the government should incorporate all stakeholders of health for a qualitative reform in the health sector.
