Politicians, journalists and professionals on Wednesday at a discussion in Dhaka said that the main duty of the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus was to hold a free, fair and credible general election in the country after carrying out some reforms within justified time.

The political parties should cooperate with the interim government to perform reforms necessary for holding a credible general election, they said.


Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, a partner of the Ganatantra Mancha, organised the commemoration meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity to mark death of two activists of the party murdered during the recent movement of the students and people where party聽 general secretary Saiful Huq chaired.

At the discussion, Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said that the activists of different political parties participated in the movement of the students against discrimination and the student movement became successful.

He hoped that the interim government would be able to hold a credible general election within a justified time.

Jatiya Party faction chairman Mostafa Jamal Haider said that they would cooperate with the interim government in holding a credible general election within a justified time.

Protham Alo joint editor Sohrab Hassan said that the main target of the interim government should be restoration of democratic rule in the country.

They should take justified time carrying out some reforms for holding a credible general election, Sohrab Hassan said.

Nagarik Oikya president and coordinator of Ganatantra Mancha Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that if the interim government could set their priorities, including controlling law and order of the country, they must be successful.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that still they found lack of coordination in the work of the interim government and it should be removed.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that the interim government should work for implementation of spirits of the student movement but they should hold a general election within a justified time.

Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon, Amar Bangladesh Party coordinator AFM Solaiman Chowdhury, Jatiya Mukti Council secretary Faiezul Hakim, Bhashani Onusari Parishad member secretary Abu Yusuf Selim, Revolutionary Workers Party politburo member Akbar Khan and others spoke at the programme.
