
The police arrested Awami League presidium member Kazi Zafarullah at a location in the capital’s Gulshan area Wednesday night in a murder case filed with Paltan police station in Dhaka.
On Thursday, a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka placed detained former law minister Anisul Huq and Beximco vice-chairman Salman F Rahman, also the former private industry affairs adviser to deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on a five-day remand in a case lodged under The Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947.
Two other metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on the day sent detained former public administration minister Farhad Hossain and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia to jail after completion of their remand period in separate cases.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha, quoting DMP deputy commissioner for media Md Talebur, reported that a team of Paltan police arrested Kazi Zafarullah during a drive in city’s Gulshan area as he was wanted in a murder case filed with Paltan Police Station.
Talebur said that Kazi Zafarullah was later rushed to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city as he fell sick.
‘But, he is now fine,’ he said.
Court officials said that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Arifur Rahman on Thursday, responding to a petition filed by the police seeking a seven-day remand, placed Anisul and Salman on a five-day remand in a case lodged with Kotwali police station under The Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947.
New Market police station sub-inspector Md Sajib Miah filed the case on September 13, the day when Anisul and Salman were arrested at the Sadarghat area in the capital when they were trying to flee Dhaka using the waterways.
During the arrests, police seized $17,592 and 726 Singapore dollars from Anisul, and 12,624 US dollars, 8,500 UAE dirhams, 11,650 rials, 779 Singapore dollars, 150 British pounds, 1,332 euros, among other foreign currencies, from Salman.
Since their arrest, the two leaders were taken into police custody for interrogation in murder cases in several phases.
According to the officials, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ragib Noor on Thursday sent former public administration minister Farhad Hossain to jail after ending his four-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of garment worker Rubel in the city’s Adabor area during anti-quota movement.
Farhad was arrested at Eskaton in the city on September 14.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Arifur Rahman on the day sent former DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia to jail on completion of the seven-day remand in the case filed over the custodial death of Nuruzzaman Jony, former general secretary of the Khilgaon thana unit of Chhatra Dal.
Besides, the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mostafizur Rahman sent Safi Modasser Khan Jyoty, son of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, to jail after the end of his four-day remand in a case of attempt to murder.
Md Robiul Sunny filed the case on September 11 with Ashulia Police Station against 30 people, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate M Arifur Rahman placed former officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, Abul Hasan, on a seven-day remand in the case of killing school student Md Sakib Hasan near Kazla in the city on July 18.
Abul Hasan was arrested at a location under Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on September 16.
