Professor Muhammad Yahya Akhtar, retired from the Department of Political Science, University of Chittagong, joined the university as vice-chancellor on Thursday.

Chittagong University registrar (acting) KM Noor Ahmad and others were present while he assumed the office, aid a press release.


Teacher-researcher and political scientist Professor Muhammad Yahya Akhtar obtained his PhD degree in 1999 from the University of Sydney, Australia. He completed his second MA degree in political science from the University of Waterloo in Canada in 1989.

Yahya Akhtar obtained BA (Hons) in Political Science from Rajshahi University in 1979 and MA in Political Science from the same university in 1981 as first class first.

He passed HSC from MM City College in Khulna in 1974 and SSC from Khulna St Joseph's High School with merit in first division in 1972.

Professor Yahya Akhtar started his teaching career in 1982 joining the Political Science Department of Chittagong University as a lecturer. He was promoted to Professor in the same department in 1999 and later promoted to Grade-I Professor and retired in October 2022.

Among his notable research works, two thesis papers, 21 books, a monograph, four book chapters, 9 research publications in international journals, a research notes and a research report have been published in 15 domestic journals.

Professor Muhammad Yahya Akhtar was born on October 28, 1957 in Dhaka. He is the father of two children. 聽
