
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday decided to initiate an inquiry against former Awami League lawmaker and the chairman of the Premier Bank, HBM Iqbal, over allegations of amassing illegal wealth through corruption.
The commission also decided to start an inquiry against former lawmaker Md Abu Zahir for Habiganj-4 constituency over allegations of wealth beyond known sources of income.
The ACC took the decisions of enquiries against them based on the commission鈥檚 intelligence unit report, said ACC deputy director Aktarul Islam.
According to the allegation, HBM Iqbal, a former lawmaker for Dhaka-14 constituency, amassed a huge amount of illegal wealth at home and abroad in the past 13 to 14 years.聽
He has been serving as the chairman of Premier Bank for 13 consecutive years since 2011 through abuse of power, the ACC said.聽
There are also allegations that Iqbal built Renaissance Hotel Gulshan, Hotel Hilton, founded Royal University of Dhaka, and became a member of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies through abuse of power.
Over a period of time, the AL leader owned numerous companies and acquired a huge amount of wealth by holding various positions in these organisations, it added.
The ACC also decided to investigate the former lawmaker for Habiganj-3, Abu Zahir, over an allegation of amassing illegal wealth.
The ACC intelligence unit found a huge amount of wealth in the name of Abu Zahir and his wife, including deposited money, investments in saving certificates, and plots of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha.
