A case was filed against Shykh Seraj, chief news editor of Channel i, and four others on Wednesday on charges of fraud and demanding extortion of Tk 50 crore.
Channel i presenter Farzana Brownia filed a case against five people, including Shykh Seraj with the court of Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Hasibul Haque.
The other accused are Zahir Uddin Mahmud Mamun, Mukit Majumdar Babu, Abdur Rashid Majumdar Parvez and Riaz Ahmed Khan.
The court directed the Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the case and submit a report.
In the case statement, Farzana said that she joined Channel i as a manager (marketing) with a salary of Tk 100, 000 in October 2014.
She also served as host and director of a programme titled Swarna Kishoree, but the authorities stopped airing the programme without any notice during the quota reform movement in 2018.
The accused also suspended the payment of Brownia’s honorarium as a host of the programme, she said.
When Farzana reported the matter to Channel i several times, she was told that her due of Tk 79 lakh would be paid later, the case statement said.
‘When I sent a legal notice through my lawyer for the unpaid dues, the accused did not respond. Instead, they threatened to kill me and demanded Tk 50 crore,’ she mentioned.
In her complaint, Brownia also alleged that all of the accused are involved in the Awami League politics.
