
Involvement of an alleged former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League was found in the abduction of three tourists who were abducted while returning from Sajek to Khagrachari on their private vehicle on Tuesday.
On the basis of a bank account, BCL’s Rangamati Government College unit former general secretary Ahmed Imtiaj Riyad’s name came up in connection with the abduction, police said.
‘The bank account given by the abductors was under the name of Ahmed Imtiaj Riyad. According to his Facebook profile, he was a former BCL leader in Rangamati,’ said Khagrachari additional superintendent of police Md Tafiqul Alam.
They are yet to confirm the matter, he said, adding that they are investigating the incident.
Earlier, it was revealed that three Bengalis, a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party and two Awami League leaders were behind Mohammad Mamun’s murder, which led to sectarian attacks on national minority houses and businesses at Dighinala in Khagrachari on September 19.
The violence spread to Khagarachari Sadar in the evening and in Rangamati on September 20. The violence killed four national minority people in the two hill districts.
One of the victims filed a case against eight unidentified persons regarding the abduction incident, Dighinala police officer-in-charge Mohammad Zakaria said, adding that no one has been arrested yet.
Rangamati deputy commissioner on Tuesday announced that the tourist centres at Sajek would remain closed and no tourist would be allowed to Sajek in order to avoid any untoward situation for the next three days beginning from Wednesday.
SM Nahed Uzzaman and Mamun Fakir, both residents of Nagarkanda upazila in Faridpur and their car driver were abducted by unidentified miscreants when they were going to Khagrachari from Sajek in Rangmati district in their car on Tuesday morning.
The abductors took away their mobile phones and national identity cards, beat them and demanded Tk 50 lakh in ransom.
At one stage, they agreed to accept Tk 20 lakh and called one of their relatives, they said.
Then the victims’ family members contacted Khagrachari district superintendent of police Arefin Jewel who talked to one of the victims.
