Agriculture adviser Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury underscored the need for proper evaluation of farmers in the country.

‘Our farmers are the key workers in ensuring the country’s food security and the success of agriculture. But they are often not appreciated. We have to overcome this issue. Proper evaluation of farmers is needed,’ he said.


Jahangir, also the home adviser, said these while speaking at a view-exchange at Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation in the capital’s Dilkusha area as chief guest, said a press release.

During the meeting, the adviser highlighted the issues of fertiliser and seed supply, irrigation system, providing services to farmers at the marginal level, prevention of irregularities and corruption.

 He was also briefed about the activities of the BADC.

Regarding agricultural production, Jahangir said that misinformation on production costs affected farmers and they were ultimately deprived of fair prices of agri-goods.

He also said that accurate information on production costs should be publicised for the benefit of farmers, urging all concerned to stop excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides to ensure food safety.

‘Farmers need to be made aware of the fact that excessive use of urea fertilisers damages the land in the long run,’ he said, adding that the use of urea-fertilisers should be limited.

Calling upon all to stand against corruption for the betterment of the people of the country, the adviser directed the BADC officials to ensure timely delivery of fertilisers and seeds to the farmers.

He also visited various departments of the BADC.

Additional secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Nurunnahar Chowdhury and the BADC chairman Abdullah Sajjad, among others, were present.
