A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Monday placed former lawmaker Sultan Mohammad Monsur Ahmed on a five-day remand in a case filed over the killing of a Juba Dal leader, Shamim Mia, in the capital’s Paltan area.

Besides, the Rapid Action Battalion arrested former Awami League lawmaker for Sirajganj-2, Jannat Ara Henry, and her husband Labu Talukdar at a location in Moulvibazar in connection with a case over attacking people during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Ragib Noor, responding to a plea submitted by sub-inspector Tonmoy Kumar Biswas seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation, allowed the police to take Monsur, also ex-vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students› Union, in their custody for five days.

Earlier in the day, the Detective Branch of police detained Sultan Monsur from the immigration of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after he had returned to the country from Canada.

Monsur was shown arrested in the case. But his name was not included in the first information report of the case.

Monsur told the court that he went abroad in May. He was implicated in the case just to harass him. He also sought bail in the case.

On September 14, Abbas Ali, a former member of the JCD central committee, filed the murder case with Paltan Model Police Station on charges of attacking the BNP rally on October 28 and killing Juba Dal leader.

Monsur was also a former president of Bangladesh Chattara League, the student wing of the Awami League, and a former organising secretary of AL.

In 2007, he became unpopular in Awami League as he was identified as a reformist during the state of emergency.

Later, Monsur joined the Kamal Hossain-led Gono Forum and became a presidium member of the political party.

Before the 11th parliamentary elections in 2018, Gano Forum President Kamal Hossain formed the Jatiya Oikya Front with the BNP, and Monsur was elected lawmaker for Moulvibazar-2 constituency with the BNP›s electoral symbol, Sheaf of Paddy, under the alliance.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Moulvibazar reported that members of RAB-9 arrested former AL lawmaker Henry and her husband Labu Talukdar at a house in the Sonapur area under Sadar upazila in Moulvibazar.

RAB raided the area on secret information at about 3:30 pm and arrested the couple.

RAB-9 Srimangal company commander Md Nurun Nabi said that the couple was wanted in a case over attacking people during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Since the fall of the AL government on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising, Henry and her husband went into hiding after a number of cases had been filed against them.

Henry, who left teaching and joined politics, is a popular name in AL.  She was elected lawmaker in the general election on January 7.
