Administration ministry secretary Md Mokhles ur Rahman on Monday said that 17 deputy secretaries would face punishment for staging demonstrations at the secretariat on September 10 and 11 protesting at the selection of deputy commissioners.

Eight of them would be awarded major punishment, four would get minor punishment and the rest five  would be cautioned, he said at a briefing at the Secretariat on the day.

The punishment process is a time consuming matter, according to him.

Earlier, a committee was formed to probe into the incidents of demonstration at the Secretariat that drew widespread criticisms.

Deputy secretaries aspiring to get postings as deputy commissioners staged demonstrations, demanding cancellation of the orders over appointment of deputy commissioners in 59 districts.

They claimed that many deputy secretaries who remained deprived during the Awami League regime were not selected for the postings the process of which was initiated by the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Mid-ranking bureaucrats usually regard the post of deputy commissioner prestigious since they act as the district magistrate in the field administration.

The administration ministry secretary also said that a report titled ‘DC posting after taking Tk 3 crore cash cheque’ that was run by a vernacular daily was false and ill-motivated.

The fake news was run to confuse the nation, he said, claiming that the account against which the cheque was issued had zero balance.

On September 24, a committee was formed after the daily reported that a cheque of Tk 3 crore, recovered from the room of the joint secretary for appointment, posting and deputation, was allegedly given by a businessman over the posting of a deputy commissioner.

He said that the ministry of information’s notice was drawn to the news.
