A total of 17 coordinators of the Student Movement Against Discrimination from Jahangirnagar University resigned amid the student platform’s alleged deviation from its goal of upholding the spirit of a discrimination-free state.

They brought allegations against some coordinators of taking decisions unilaterally, involving in controversial activities.

They also compared activities of some coordinators with those of the former government-backed student body while taking the decision to resign from the platform.

They announced their resignation at a press conference at the university’s Teacher-Student Centre on Thursday evening.

The coordinators are Abdur Rasid Jitu, Rudra Muhammad Safiullah, Hasib Zaman, Zahidul Islam Emon, Zahidul Islam, Fahmida Faiza, Rokaiya Jannat Jholok, Mishu Khatun, Rafid Hasan Rajon, Hasanur Rahman Sumon, Abdul Hai Swapan, Nasim Al Tariq, Oindrila Majumdar, Zia Uddin Ayan, Tanjim Ahmed, Zahidul Islam Bappi, and Saidul Islam.

Abdur Rasid Jitu, a coordinator of the platform, read out a written statement.

The platform has remained silent on nine points including a ban on partisan student politics, prosecution of those involved in the July massacre, and compensation for the injured on which ordinary people have sacrificed their lives, the statement said.

Citing the recent mob lynching of a former JU Chhatra League leader on the campus, the statement said that it was unacceptable that the student platform was yet to reach a final decision on the involvement of some coordinators in the incident after about 15 days.

The statement also questioned the necessity of keeping the platform functional after the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina-led ‘autocratic’ regime.

The existence of the platform is obscuring the history of participation of people from all walks of life, it claimed.

The platform has failed to include activists from all walks of life in Bangladesh under the same banner, and failed to ensure representation from various universities, the statement also alleged.

In the statement, the coordinators also urged the interim government to work on rebuilding Bangladesh, free from all kinds of discrimination.

The student-led mass uprising ousted the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.
