
Labour rights experts at a discussion on Saturday proposed an amendment of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006 to make it inclusive for the protection of the the rights of workers.
The Solidarity Centre, Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies and International Lawyers Assisting Workers Network jointly organised the discussion in a city hotel, said a press release.
The 40-point recommendations also included bringing all workers in Bangladesh, irrespective of formal or informal sectors, under the purview of a singular law, ensuring absolute trade union rights, eliminating complexities before trade union registration process, increasing compensation for accidents at workplace by upholding occupational safety and health.
They also demanded increasing maternity leave to six months, enhancing capacity of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, accelerating litigation process of the Labour Court and formulating sections and provisions of laws to safeguard female workers from gender-based violence and harassment.
Moderated by the BILS executive director Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmmed, the Solidarity Centre programme director in Bangladesh AKM Nasim, ILO senior programme officer Chowdhury Albab Kadir, BLAST鈥檚 advocate Sifat E Noor Khanam, Industriall Bangladesh Council president AM Nazim Uddin and Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad joint coordinator Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam, among others, spoke at the discussion.
