A truck with twenty four and a half metric tonnes of government rice was seized at Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat on Friday as it was lifted from a warehouse.
Warehouse officer Ferdous Alam was detained as upazila food officer Enamul Haque filed a case with the Kaliganj police against him for illegally taking away the rice from the government warehouse.
Confirming the matter, Kaliganj upazila nirbahi officer Zahir Imam said that Ferdous Alam lifted the rice worth Tk 3 core from the warehouse in 25 trolleys early Thursday.
Kaliganj upazila food officer Enamul Haque said that the work Ferdous had done as a government employee was not acceptable in any way.
‘We have filed a case with the police station. Apart from this, an investigation team has been formed in this regard. The police detained Ferdous on Saturday,’ he added.
Deputy commissioner HM Raqib Haider, meanwhile, on Saturday formed a four-member investigation committee to investigate the incident.
The committee was asked to submit its report with recommendations in next five working days.
The rice reportedly was removed to the warehouse of rice mill owner Ekramul Haque in the Sukandighi area of Chalbola union of the upazila.
UNO Zahir Imam along with officials of the district food department raided the warehouse on Thursday and recovered 600 sacks of rice from the spot.
