Twenty-three additional High Court judges were sworn in on Wednesday.

The chief justice, Syed Refaat Ahmed, administered their oath at the Supreme Court judges’ lounge.

Earlier, the president, Mohammed Shahabuddin, made the appointments — the first under the interim government.

According to the official notification, the appointees include six retired district and sessions judges, one serving judge, seven deputy attorneys general and nine senior lawyers.

In the afternoon, law adviser Asif Nazrul and attorney general Md Asaduzzaman held a meeting with the chief justice at his office in the Supreme Court.

After the meeting, Asif said that the Supreme Court was expected to take action against judges who allegedly supported the ‘fascist regime’ of Sheikh Hasina.

Asked about the demand for the removal of 30 judges appointed during the Awami League regime, Asif acknowledged that complaints were raised against certain justices.

‘This is not our demand. The movement led by students and people against the fascist government believe that some judges have acted against the interests of the protestors,’ he said.

He also mentioned that their discussions with the chief justice touched upon the challenges faced by both the judiciary and the law ministry.

Furthermore, he stated that the International Crimes Tribunal would be reconstituted after the Supreme Court resumes operations on October 20.

The retired district judges appointed as HC judges are Justice Md Golam Martuza Mazumder, Justice Syed Enayet Hossain, Justice Md Monsur Alam, Justice Syed Zahed Mansur, Justice AKM Rasheduzzaman Raza, and Justice Zabid Hossain.

Justice Md Abdul Mannan, was served as the judge of the Administrative Tribunal at Khulna before his elevation.

The seven deputy attorneys general elevated to the bench are Justice Kazi Waliul Islam, Justice Aynunnahar Siddiqua, Justice Nasrin Akhter, Justice Shathika Hossain, Justice Syed Md Tazrul Hossain Jewel, Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali, and Justice Foyej Ahmed.

The seven DAGs were appointed by the interim government after assuming office on August 8.

Among the 10 lawyers appointed judges are Justice Mubina Asaf Priti, Justice Tamanna Rahman, Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud, Justice Md Hamidur Rahman, Justice Md Toufiq Inam (Tipu), Justice Yousuf Abdullah Suman, Justice Md Sagir Hossain, Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi, and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury.

Supreme Court Bar Association president AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon while talking to reporters opined that the judges should have not been appointed in absence of any rules as required by the constitution for the appointment.
