A 32-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by a group of more than 30 people, including staff of a real estate company owned by Bangladesh Nationalist Party national executive committee member Shaikh Rabiul Alam and their hired goons, in the capital’s Mohanagar Residential Project area under Hatirjheel police station on Thursday.
The victim, Tanjeel Jahan Islam Tamim, 32, son of Sultan Ahmed of the Mohanagar Residential Project area, worked at Deepto TV. Sultan is one of the three owners of a piece of land in the project area where the developer company constructed a nine-storey building.
Hatirjheel police station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said that Tamim was killed as a sequel of a dispute between Sultan and the developer company over ownership of an apartment.
‘We have detained four people, including Abdul Latif, an engineer of the developer company. Filing a case is underway,’ he added.
He said that three other detained people were outsiders Korban Ali and Mahi, and one of the land owners, Mozammel Haque Kabir.
‘There are three owners of the piece of land. The victim’s father is one of them. Land owner Mozammel was alleged of not recording CCTV footage after October 4,’ the OC said, adding that the victim’s father told police that he would file a case after the burial of his son. Â
The renovation works at the apartment in question began on Wednesday but a group of the developer company people barred the work, according to Tamim’s father Sultan Ahmed.Â
‘My son Tamim had been supervising the workers for the renovation works on Thursday. At that time, a group of more than 30 men, including some from the developer company, attacked them,’ Sultan said.
He said that the miscreants punched him and his son for several minutes and one of the attackers grabbed Tamim’s throat with his hands.
After the attack, Tamim fell sick and the family took him to a nearby hospital where he died.
Sultan Ahmed alleged that the murder was planned under the supervision of the developer company managing director Shaikh Rabiul Alam, who is also a member of the national executive committee of the BNP.
BNP central leader Shaikh Rabiul Alam, also the managing director of Pleasant Properties Limited, could not be reached over the phone as his phone was found switched off.
Rabiul, however, denied the allegations to the media. Â
The victim’s father alleged that Department of Narcotics deputy director Mamun and Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s detective branch former chief Harun Or Rashid’s father-in-law were also involved in the apartment process.
Mamun could not be reached for comments.
Sultan said that he along with two other owners gave the land to the developer company, Pleasant Properties Ltd.
‘I was supposed to get five apartments but the company handed over two apartments in 2022 and was hesitating to hand over the rest ones even after all the apartments of the nine-storey building had been constructed,’ Sultan said.
They were supposed to do all the renovation work of the building, he said, adding, ‘But the company asked us to do the renovation of an apartment with our own money.’
