The Police Reform Commission, established by the interim government, has aimed to prepare reform proposals to reconstruct the Bangladesh Police as a ‘pro-people force’.
One of the reform body members said that the members of the commission had recently sat for a brief time to chalk out their ‘scope of works’.
‘We are examining the available Police Reform Proposals, prepared by different local and international organisations,’ he said.
The commission would soon visit the Police Headquarters, the Police Bureau of Investigation and other apparatuses of the Bangladesh Police, and talk to police officials.Â
He said that the commission would also analyse the pros and cons of a Police Commission, if there was any.
‘The primary goal of establishing a commission is to restrict police personnel from doing politically-biased and abusive activities. The commission will make them accountable to the citizens,’ the member said.
The Police Reform Commission chief, Safar Raj Hossain, could not be reached for comment over the phone despite several attempts on Thursday.
The other members of the commission are home ministry’s Public Security Division additional secretary Abu Mumtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed, former director general of Department of Narcotics Control Mohammad Iqbal, former divisional commissioner and joint secretary Harun Chowdhury, former additional inspector general of police Sheikh Sajjad Ali, deputy inspector general of police Golam Rosul, Dhaka University’s law department teacher Professor Shahnaz Huda, human rights activist ASM Nasiruddin Elan.
A student representative is yet to be co-opted into the commission.
