A case was filed with the Kotwali police station on Saturday against three people over attack near a Durga Puja mandap in the capital’s Tanti Bazar area on Friday night that left five people injured.

Confirming the matter, Kotwali police officer-in-charge Md Anamul Hassan said that police filed a case on charge of robbery under the Penal Code 392 naming three people, who were detained with the help of local people on Friday.

The three accused are Akash, 23, a resident of Gaibandha, Md Hridoy, a resident of Patuakhali, Md Jibon and Md Jibon, 19, a resident of Noakhali district.

‘We have identified them as muggers. Two or three cases over allegations of mugging were previously reported against them,’ OC Anamul said, adding that they are yet to produce them before the court.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Friday night claimed that the attack near the Tanti Bazar mandap in Dhaka on Friday at about 8:00pm took place when muggers tried to snatch a woman’s chain.

Five people were injured in a knife attack by muggers near the mandap, said a DMP press release.

DMP deputy commissioner for media Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that police recovered a knife, a chain and a liquid-filled bottle from them.

He said that police also sent five injured persons to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital for treatment.

The Ministry of External Affairs in India in a statement on Saturday called upon the Bangladesh government to ensure safety and security of Hindus and all minority community people and their places of worship, particularly during this festival time.

The MEA also expressed serious concern over the attack on a puja mandap at Tanti Bazar in Dhaka and theft at the revered Jeshoreshwari Kali temple at Satkhira.

In Dhaka on Saturday, over a hundred people from the Hindu community blocked Tanti Bazar crossing for three hours demanding justice for the attack and vowed to continue their demonstration until the interim government chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, sought public apology over the incident.

Protesters under the banner of Old Dhaka Residents blocked the crossing from about 2:30pm to 5:30pm causing immense sufferings to city residents due to traffic congestion in and around the area.

DMP Lalbagh Zone deputy commissioner Jasim Uddin, however, assured them of resolving the problem.

Bangladesh Hindu Jagran Manch, a platform advocating for rights of Hindus, protested at the attack near the Tanti Bazar puja mandap on Friday evening.

Minority leaders termed the incident as a failed petrol bomb attack on the mandap.

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council acting general secretary Monindra Kumar Nath said that the attackers hurled a blazing bottle filled with petrol at the Durga Puja mandap.

‘It, however, did not explode,’ said Monindra.
