A local journalist was reportedly hacked to death over a feud in front of his house at Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh on Saturday morning.

The deceased is Swapan Kumar Bhadra, 65, a former vice-president of Tarakanda Press Club.

Confirming the matter, Mymensingh’s Kotwali model police station officer-in-charge Safiqul Islam Khan said that police detained a youth named Sagar.

‘Sagar is known as a stalker and drug addict in the area. He is also accused of stabbing people in the past,’ he said.

After visiting the spot in the afternoon, Mymensingh superintendent of police Azizul Islam said that Swapan earlier protested at Sagar’s activities.

‘Sagar also attacked Swapan earlier. The matter is under investigation,’ he added.

Swapan Kumar Bhadra was a former Tarakanda upazila correspondent of the Dainik Swajan newspaper published from Mymensingh.

Swapan used to regularly write about various events and issues, including terrorism and drug trafficking in the area on social media Facebook.

Victim’s family alleged that Swapan Kumar Bhadra was killed for writing about these issues on social media.

They added that he was also attacked a year ago.

Swapan’s nephew Jewel Bhadra said that his uncle was attacked with a knife at about 11:00am on Saturday while he was reading a newspaper outside his home, leaving Swapan critically injured.

Local people took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead.

Kotwali model police station sub-inspector Abul Kashem said that there were six wounds on Swapan’s neck and his left wrist was severed.
