At least 15 people were injured in a clash that erupted after a procession of Hindu devotees was reportedly attacked.
Police and army personnel used clubs to disperse the quarrelling people in the Patuatuli area of the capital on Sunday night, according to police and hospital sources.
None of the injuries were serious, and all individuals were released from the hospital after treatment.
The clash occurred when the devotees were on their way to immerse a Durga idol from a temple at Shankhari Bazaar in Dhaka’s Old Town area.
Confirming the incident, Kotowali police station officer-in-charge Md Anamul Hassan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the altercation took place at around 11:30 PM on Sunday.
Devotees alleged that unidentified individuals attacked their procession, hurling brick chips at them, which triggered a tense situation in the area.
‘I was injured when I was trying to calm down the members of the minority community. Later, army personnel intervened and charged batons at the agitated crowd to restore order,’ Anamul told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
The incident occurred on the concluding day of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival for Hindus.
A ward master at Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital reported that 15 people received initial treatment at the hospital.
