At least 14 people were injured on Thursday as two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, allegedly clashed over sitting on chairs at party joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon’s residence, used as a temporary office of the party.

The first round of clashes took place on the ground floor of the office at about 7:00pm on Thursday.

Later at about 9:00pm, another clash took place when the injured persons undergoing treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital were reportedly attacked.

The clashes took place between the supporters of district Chhatra Dal president Siddikur Rahman Nahid and former joint convener Zahid Hossain Jappi.

According to the injured, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came to Narsingdi on Thursday as chief guest at a function to provide financial assistance to families of those killed in the anti-quota student movement.

After he left, Nahid stopped Zahid’s workers from sitting on some chairs at the front during a meeting at the residence of Khairul Kabir Khokon.

Narsingdi Sadar Hospital resident medical officer Mahmudul Kabir Basar said that 14 people were treated in the emergency department in the incident.

‘Four of them have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Panic gripped the hospital complex and at least three people were hacked in an attack at the hospital,’ he said.

An attempt was also made to vandalise a room in the hospital’s emergency department, he added.

Injured Chhatra Dal leader Zahid Hossain said, ‘We were attacked at the party office. Nahid and his supporters attacked four of us with sharp weapons while we were being treated at the hospital.’

Denying the allegation, Siddikur Rahman Nahid said that there was an argument between the activists over a trifling matter at the office.

‘My well-wishers thought that I was injured, and admitted to the hospital. If there is an attack, CCTV footage should be checked and the perpetrators should be brought to justice,’ he added.

Narsingdi model police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Emdadul Haque said that no complaint was made yet.
