
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Friday remanded six employees of Palli Bidyut Samity in police custody for three days in two sedition cases filed against them for their alleged involvement in destabilising the power sector.
The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board on Wednesday and Thursday also relieved 20 employees of the PBS of their posts for their protests for merger of the BREB and the PBS, and implementation of same service rules.
The court’s development came a day after the PBS held blackout programme in several rural areas across the country, including Netrakona, Dhaka, Barisal, Cumilla, Feni, Magura and Brahmanbaria, and threatened to hold a long-march with 45,000 PBS employees towards the BREB.
The PBS employees gave the threat to restore 10 sacked people’s jobs and release of detainees and removed BREB chairman of his post.Â
The remanded employees are Munshiganj PBS assistant general manager Rajon Kumar Das, Brahmanbaria PBS deputy general manager Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan, Cumilla PBS-1 deputy general manager Dipak Kumar Singha, Magura PBS deputy general manager Md Rahat, Netrakona PBS assistant general manager Monir Hossain and Sirajganj PBS-2 deputy general manager Belal Hossain.
Of the six, Belal Hossain was accused in one sedition case, while the five others were accused in the other case.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury passed the order as the police produced the accused before the court and pleaded for 10-day remand, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
The BREB director for admin Arshad Hossain filed the cases against them with the Khilkhet police station in Dhaka on Thursday.
Another BREB director for admin Sharmin Mahumud told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a repercussion was going on over the protest and arrest of employees.
‘We are trying our level best to bring the situation under control. We will have to wait till Sunday to understand the situation,’ she added.
The BREB on Wednesday relieved Rajon Kumar, Asaduzzaman, Dipak Kumar, Monir Hossain, Cumilla PBS-4 senior general manager Zakir Hossain, Barishal PBS-1 general manager Humayun Kabir, Noakhali PBS wiring inspector Abu Salam Jabed, Md Rahat, Dhaka PBS-1 assistant general manager Abdul Hakim and Dhaka PBS-2 assistant general manager Salah Uddin of their posts.
It also relieved Munshiganj PBS junior engineer Hasanuzzaman, Brahmanbaria PBS senior general manager Mokbul Hossain, Dhaka PBS-1 senior general manager Masfiqul Hasan, Dhaka PBS-4 general manager Julfiquar, Rangpur PBS-1 senior general manager Abul Hasan, Belal Hossain, Gazipur PBS-1 deputy general manager Zahidul Islam, Dhaka PBS-1 deputy general manager Md Abdul Jalil, Jhalakati PBS assistant general manager Yasir Arafat and Manikganj PBS deputy general manager Samiul Kabir of their posts on Thursday.
According to the BREB officials, over 3.5 crore people in the country’s rural areas got electricity service from them.
The PBS employees have been trying to arrange protests after the fall of Sheikh Hasina amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
