Unidentified assailants allegedly stabbed one person to death and left two others, including a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the Awami League, critically injured in Sylhet on Friday night.

The deceased is Shawan Miah, 25, son of Selim Miah of Bankolapara in the Subid Bazar area in the city.


The injured are Hasan Mahmud, 25, the general secretary of the Sylhet Engineering College unit BCL and son of Abdul Basit Selim of Kadamtali area, and Md Mazhar of Mendibagh area in the city, police said.

Local people said that several unidentified people stabbed Shawan at Manipuri Lane under Sagardighir Par in the city at about 9:00pm on Friday.

Confirming the incident, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital’s police outpost in-charge Zafar Ahmed said that the locals took the victim to the hospital at about 9:30pm after rescuing him from the spot in a critical condition.

‘Shawan died at about 11:30pm while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the hospital,’ the police officer said on Saturday, adding that legal action is underway in this regard.

In another incident, a group of unidentified youths hacked BCL leader Hasan and his friend Mazhar, leaving them critically injured at about 8:00pm on Friday night in the Mendibagh area in the city.

The locals said that the attackers severed tendons of hands and legs of the victims.

The assailants allegedly left the scene immediately after the incident.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Muhammad Saiful Islam confirmed the incident to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

The two injured youths were admitted to the SOMCH after rescuing them in a critical condition from the spot, Saiful said, adding that they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment at about 10:00pm as their condition deteriorated.

‘Legal action would be taken in this regard after receiving written complaints from the victims’ families,’ the SMP officer said.
