Unidentified people on Sunday night covered the head of a female figure of the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture with black cloth on Dhaka University campus.Â
The sculpture was found covered with a black hijab at around 10:00pm.
Eyewitnesses mentioned that a group of people arrived on motorcycles and carried out the act. ‘Their faces were covered, so they could not be identified.’
Later, Tarequl Islam and Mahin Sarker, coordinators of the Students’ Movement Against Discrimination, and former leader of the Bangladesh Student Union, Liton Nandi, along with several others, removed the black cloth from the head of the woman figure.
The DU proctor, Saifuddin Ahmed, immediately sent two assistant proctors to investigate the incident.
Assistant proctors Md Rafiqul Islam and Md Rabiul Islam visited the area.
Rafiqul Islam said that when they reached the area, they found that the cloth had been removed.
‘We have not yet identified who was involved in this incident. We will try to identify them by examining the CCTV footage from the surrounding area,’he said.
Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed stated that they had formed an investigation committee on Monday to look into the matter. ‘They will submit a report within 10 working days.’
He also warned that such dirty activities could not be tolerated on the university campus.Â
