Several hundred workers of a readymade garment factory blocked the busy Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Trimore in Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, for over 30 hours demanding arrears.
Witnesses said that the police cleared the road for traffic movement at about 4:00pm on Tuesday, about 32 hours after beginning the blockade without any causality.
Workers said that the management of Generation Next Ltd did not pay their wages for the past three months even after making commitments repeatedly.
The factory remained closed for an indefinite period since the past week, they said.
They said that they urged the factory management to reopen the unit and paying all the dues.
On Monday, the agitated workers took to the highway to press their demands as the authorities did not pay heed to their demands.
Ashulia industrial police director Sarwar Alam said that the workers dispersed as they used water cannons to clear the road for traffic movement.
‘Traffic movement is now normal,’ he said at about 6:00pm on Tuesday.
Ashulia police station officer-in-charge Abu Bakar Siddik said that the passengers suffered seriously on the highway while goods leaden trucks waited for hours there due to the blockade.
Though the workers were requested times and again to leave the road, they did not pay heed to the calls from the police, he said.
Transport worker Riad Hossain said that the protesters vandalised several vehicles when police dispersed them.
The workers alleged that the factory management did not give them any assurance to pay their wages.
None of the factory management could be reached for comments even after several attempts on Tuesday.
RMG workers at different industrial hubs including Ashulia and Gazipur continued sporadic movement to press home their different demands since the interim government led by Professor Mohammad Yunus had taken charge on August 8, three days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina regime amid a student-mass uprising on August 5.
