
A handcuffed accused in a case of check forgery was snatched from police custody allegedly by his relatives at the Mangalbaria market area under Tarash upazila in Sirajganj on Saturday.
The accused, Firoz Hossain, 35, son of Gani Mia of the South Solapara area of Tarash Upazila town was snatched at about 11:00am, the police said.
The case against Firoz was lodged with a district court in Natore which issued an warrant of arrest against him 15 days ago, the police said.
Witnesses said that only two policemen, sub-inspector Montu Mia and constable Sanatan Das, of Tarash police station went to arrest the accused.
After the arrest of Firoz, his relatives attacked the police and snatched the handcuffed Firoz. A scuffle also occurred between the police and the relatives of Firoz.
ASI Montu and constable Sanatan were also injured in the scuffle, they said.
Firoz fled the scene with handcuffs, but police could not nab Firoz until filing the report in the evening.
Tarash police station officer-in-charge Aslam Ali said that they asked the family to produce Firoz before the police within a specific time. ‘A regular case will be filed against him if the family fails to comply with the police demand.’
Sirajganj superintendent of police Md Faruque Hossain said, ‘The process of arresting the accused is underway. If there is negligence of duty of the police officials, punitive actions will be taken after investigation.’
