The police on Sunday arrested former housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain at the capital鈥檚 Basundhara Residential area in a murder case.
A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on the day sent former independent lawmaker and ex-Juba League leader Syed Sayedul Haque Suman to jail after rejecting his bail prayer.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police鈥檚 deputy commissioner for media and public relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said that a team of detective branch of DMP arrested Mosharraf Hossain at about 2:30 pm.
Court officials said that the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman on the day sent Mosharraf to jail in a murder case filed with the Paltan police station over killing an activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Makbul Hossain, in 2022.听
According to the case statement, BNP activist Makbul was killed in police firing when the law enforcers raided BNP鈥檚 Naya Paltan central office in Dhaka and attacked thousands of the party people beside the office on December 7, 2022.
The case was filed with Paltan police station on September 30 this year against 256 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Mosharraf was elected lawmaker for the Chattogram-1 constituency seven times with Awami League ticket.
He served as housing and public works minister until January 2019 and also held the post of minister for civil aviation and tourism in 1996.
Earlier in the day, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatuallh rejected the bail petition filed by former lawmaker for Habiganj-4, Syed Sayedul Haque Suman, and ordered the authorities to send him to jail.
The police produced him before the court on completion of his five-day remand in police custody for interrogation in a case over an attempt to murder.
The police on October 22 arrested him at the capital鈥檚 Mirpur-6 area in an attempted murder case filed with the Mirpur Police Station.
On September 23, victim Hridoy Miah filed the case with the Mirpur police station.
According to the case documents, Hridoy, who used to work as an assistant chef at a restaurant, joined the student protests on July 19 at the capital鈥檚 Mirpur 10 and was attacked by Awami League activists.
At one point, Hridoy sustained bullet injuries, the case document said.
