A female readymade garment worker who sustained injuries during a clash between security forces and workers over arrears died on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The victim, Champa Khatun, 25, daughter of Chanu Miah, a resident of Amodpur at Pirganj in Rangpur, was a worker of Generation Next Fashion Ltd at Ashulia.
Chanu Miah said that Champa sustained injuries to her chest and hand in a clash with law enforcement agencies in Ashulia on October 23 while she and several hundred workers of the factory demonstrated blocking the road to press home their demands.
So far, this is the second incident of death of RMG workers in alleged clash with law enforcers after the interim government took charge after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5.
Dhaka Medical College police outpost inspector Md Faruk said that the body was handed over to the family after autopsy.
The victim’s family members said that they were not willing to file any case.
‘We would not get back the person who passed away. So, there is no point in filing a case,’ said Bitul Miah, the husband of the victim.
The family members said that they were given total Tk six lakh by the government, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and the factory where she was employed.
Earlier on September 30, Kawsar Hossain Khan, 27, an operator of Mango Tex Limited, was shot dead during a protest in the Ashulia industrial zone.
RMG workers at different industrial hubs demonstrated for different demands, including wage hikes, since the interim government took charge.
A number of factories were compelled to suspend production for weeks due to the unrest.
