The International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday ordered former additional superintendent of police Shahidul Islam, previously serving in Savar Circle, to be sent to Dhaka Central Jail over alleged crimes against humanity during the July-August student movement against discrimination.
The three-member tribunal of Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood, and retired district judge M Mohitul Hoque Anam Chowdhury, passed the order after Shahidul was produced before the court.
Shahidul is one of 17 police officers for whom the tribunal issued arrest warrants on October 27, according to prosecutor Abdullah Al Noman.
Shahidul was arrested on Wednesday night in Cox鈥檚 Bazar and then transferred to the Shahbagh police station.
He was later taken to Tungipara police station in Gopalganj, where his identity was verified against his village address, before being brought before the tribunal.
This marks the second instance of an accused being presented before the reconstituted tribunal under the interim government.
Earlier, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Jasim Uddin Mollah, who also hails from Tungipara in Gopalganj, was presented to the tribunal on Wednesday.
The tribunal鈥檚 October 27 order asked jail authorities to produce 14 political figures, a retired Supreme Court judge, five former police officials, and a dismissed army officer on November 18 and 20 on charges of crimes against humanity related to the student-led uprising that led to Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 ouster.
Among the implicated individuals are former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, and other senior law enforcement officials.
Chief prosecutor Tajul Islam requested the tribunal to withhold the identities of most accused officers to prevent potential evasion of arrest.
