
At least 11 readymade garment workers had so far been arrested and sent to jail in connection with setting fire to army jeep and a police van during a clash in the capital’s Mirpur on Thursday.
Bhashantek police station officer-in-charge Faisal Ahmed said that they sent five people to the court on Saturday, and the court sent them to jail.
‘The army held three people and handed over to us. We also arrested two people. Earlier, we sent six people to the court on Friday,’ the OC said, adding that the number of arrested over the incident rose to 11 so far.
On Friday, the police filed two cases with Bhashantek and Kafrul police stations against 1,100 unnamed garment workers on the allegations of obstructing the members of law enforcement agencies from performing their duty during the three-hour clashes on the Kachukhet road in Mirpur-14 area.
About 450-500 unnamed RMG workers were made accused in the case filed with the Bhashantek police station, and 500-600 unnamed were made accused with Kafrul police station, according to police officials.Â
Kafrul police station officer-in-charge Kazi Golam Mostafa said that none was arrested so far in the case filed with the police station.
The Inter Services Public Relation directorate in a press release on Friday said that they had held three miscreants in connection with the Mirpur-14 violence and handed over to Bhashantek police station.
The arrested are Rifat, Hridoy and Yasin.
The ISPR also said that the Bangladesh Army would continue drive against those for setting fire to army vehicle, creating fear among public and damaging public properties.
During the clashes, at least two teenage RMG workers also sustained bullet injuries as the members of the security agencies allegedly opened fire on protesters.
The injured workers, Md Al-Amin, 18, and Jhuma Akter, 15, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet injuries.
The workers alleged that the factory line chief Md Kabir and his brother-in-law had tortured a number of workers, including a female worker, outside the factory a couple of weeks ago but the management denied the allegations.
