The Chapainawabganj district police on Monday withdrew eight members of police from Gomastapur police station, including its officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam, over the incident of snatching an accused from police custody.

Md Rezaul Karim, superintendent of Chapainawabganj district police, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had withdrawn the OC Shahidul, sub-inspectors Tarek Ahmed, Delowar Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad, and constables Nefaur, Anis, Shamim and Manik for their unprofessional conduct and negligence in duty.


‘The OC Shahidul has been transferred to the district police control room as its in-charge, while the seven others were attached to the district police lines,’ he said, adding that they had also formed an internal committee headed by additional SP (administration and finance) Md Abul Kalam Shahid to investigate the incident.

‘The committee has been asked to submit its report within fifteen working days. We will take necessary actions following the recommendations of the probe committee,’ he added.

Earlier on Thursday night, a group of people blocked the way of a team of the Gomastapur police at Bangipara Santoshpur Bazar in Gomastapur, while the latter was returning to the police station in a CNG-run three-wheeler after arresting ward unit Awami League president Monirul Islam Mintu in a theft case.

At one stage of the altercation, the followers of the AL leader scuffled with the policemen, vandalised the three-wheeler, and snatched away Mintu from them.

On information, additional police force went immediately to the spot and rescued the police members.

Rezaul Karim said that a case was filed with the Gomastapur police station on Thursday night against 21 named and 150 unnamed people for snatching the accused and attacking on the police.

He said that they had already arrested 15 people in the case till Monday afternoon.
