Freelance photographer Siyam Mian of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur was murdered for money.
‘Swadhin Mian, who was arrested within 48 hours of the murder, gave this information during preliminary interrogation,’ Rangpur superintendent of police Mohammad Sharif Uddin told journalists on Monday.
The arrested Swadhin Mian is the son of Anarul Islam of the nearby Ganjipur Majhpara village in the same upazila.
Swadhin Mian, main accused in the murder, told police that Siyam used to take pictures with his own camera in the nearby ‘Vinnojogot Entertainment Park’ and traded bricks and sand in Kholeya Ganjipur market of the upazila.
Siyam sold his camera for Tk 40,000 only three to four days before the murder. To get the money for buying drugs, Swadhin planned to kill Siyam.
As planned, on October 27 at about 10:30pm, Siyam was manoeuvred on the east bank of the Teesta Barrage Project’s canal embankment. After that, Swadhin with his cohorts hit Siaym’s neck and head with a knife.
Later, by taking off his T-shirt, Swadhin strangled Siyam and confirmed his death.
Then Swadhin ran away with Tk 1,150 cash taken from Siyam’s pant pocket, mobile phone and motorcycle.
In this regard, the SP told journalists that Swadhin had given a confessional statement under section 164 in the court.
‘After recording the statement, the court sent Swadhin Mian to jail. Hectic efforts are on to arrest other accused involved in the murder,’ the SP added.
