A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent former Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists president Molla Jalal to jail in a case filed over kidnapping and attempted rape.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Akhtaruzzaman passed the order as the police produced Molla Jalal before the court on Tuesday, said Abul Kalam, sub-inspector of the Shahbagh police station in the capital.

After hearing a petition filed by the lawyer of the accused, the court denied Jalal bail in the case and sent him to jail.

The police arrested him at Segun Bagicha in the capital on Monday.

Earlier on November 1, a woman filed a case against journalist Molla Jalal, 65, and his associate Sulaiman alias Selim, 54, with the capital’s Shahbagh police station on charges of kidnapping and attempted rape.

In the case, the victim said, ‘I am a musician. Molla Jalal has been harassing me in various ways for the past 17 years in the name of journalism.’

She said that she met Molla Jalal during a cultural programme at Bhaluka Press Club in 2007.

She alleged that accused Sulaiman and an unidentified person blindfolded her and forcibly took her to an unknown house, where Molla Jalal, Sulaiman and the unidentified person tortured her.

‘Molla Jalal molested me and attempted to rape me with the help of the other accused. When I screamed, the accused released me and threatened to kill me,’ the victim said.

She was released at about 5:00am the next day and was left on the road near Ramna Park foot overbridge, she alleged.
