A ward unit leader of Juba League, youth organisation of the Awami League, succumbed to injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, a week after he was tied to an electric pole and beaten with iron rods and sticks on October 30.

The deceased, Saidur Rahman alias Babu, 55, was the president of ward 8 Juba League unit in Lakshmipur Kholabaria union under Natore sadar upazila.

‘Saidur succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Wednesday evening,’ said hospital’s ward master Mosarraf Hossain.

Saifur Rahman, elder brother of deceased Saidur Rahman, said that after the fall of the AL government amid student-led mass uprising on August 5, an identified ‘terrorist’ named Kangal had been demanding Tk 5 lakh as extortion from his brother on behalf of Bangladesh Nationalist Party Rajshahi divisional organising secretary Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu.

‘On October 30, a group of youths led by Kangal picked up Saidur from Natore Sadar Fire Service intersection and took him to Kangal’s office at Dorappur Bazaar,’ he said, adding that the youths beat his brother there with hammers on his head, backbone, hands and legs.

Saifur said that the youths then took his brother in the middle of the bazar, tied him to an electric pole and beat him again in broad daylight.

‘Before his death, Saidur told me that Kangal and his men beat him with hammers all over his body,’ he said, adding that Saidur suffered fractures in his head, backbone, hands, and legs.

Saifur said that he filed a murder case with Natore Sadar Police Station on Thursday accusing twelve people including Kangal for killing his brother.

Shahidul Islam, younger brother of Saidur, alleged that BNP men killed his brother in broad daylight only because he was involved in Juba League politics.

However, both Kangal and BNP leader Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu could not be reached for their comments despite repeated attempts over the phone.

Contacted, Natore BNP convener Shahidul Islam Bacchu told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Kangal was involved in Juba Dal politics.

‘I do not actually know whether and why Kangal beat Saidur or not. I will inform you later after knowing about the incident in detail,’ he added.
