The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday stayed a High Court order that had granted bail to Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of former Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, in a double murder case for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque, chamber judge of the Appellate Division, issued the stay following a petition from the state requesting suspension of the High Court’s November 5 bail order.
Additional attorney general Mohammad Arshadur Rouf told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the Appellate Division’s full bench scheduled for Tuesday to hold further hearing in the state’s appeal against Bakhtiar’s bail.
Bakhtiar’s conviction stems from an incident on April 13, 2015, when he allegedly fired gunshots from his car on the Dilu Road at New Eskaton in Dhaka.
The gunfire critically injured rickshaw puller Abdul Hakim and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub, both of whom later succumbed to their injuries—Hakim on April 15, 2015, and Yakub on April 23, 2015 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In response, Hakim’s mother, Monowara Begum, filed a case with the Ramna police station.
On July 21, 2015, detectives charged Bakhtiar with murder but cleared his driver of any involvement.
Bakhtiar was taken into custody after his bail was denied by a Dhaka court on July 2, 2015.
On January 30, 2019, a Dhaka court sentenced Bakhtiar to life in prison, stating that his actions ‘deserved the death penalty’ given the gravity of the crime.
