The High Court on Wednesday dismissed proceedings in a 2016 case filed under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (Amendment) Act, 2013, against Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, her son and party acting chairman Tarique Rahman, and one other.

The case was filed by Abdul Kader Sujan, an Awami League leader from Chattogram (South), on October 3, 2016, alleging that the accused had issued a death threat against then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina and defamed Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Facebook posts.

Delivering the verdict, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain acted upon a petition filed in 2017 by Chowdhury Irad Ahmed Siddiky, also named in the case, seeking to quash the charges.

Speaking to reporters, Irad’s son, Ishrak Ahmed Siddiky, stated that the court dismissed the case on grounds of ‘preposterous allegations’ and ‘political harassment,’ noting that the accused had no involvement in the alleged offence.

Deputy attorney general Md Jashim Sarker represented the state in the proceedings.
