
Speakers in a side event on Accelerating Finance for Just Transition in Bangladesh: Insights from COP 29 held at the Bangladesh pavilion of COP 29 on Thursday in Baku, Azerbaijan emphasised on international cooperation for financing just transition initiatives in Bangladesh.
It was mentioned in the side event that for implementation of just transition activities by 2030 in line with the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) for 2023-2050 requires US$ 11.63 billion, a press release said.
It said that the proposed interventions would contribute to creating climate-resilient jobs for 4.1 million people.
OSHE Foundation and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), an international development agency, jointly organised the event.
The session was chaired by Aminur Rashid Chowdhury Repon, executive director of the OSHE Foundation.
S M Morshed, vice-chairperson of OSHE Foundation, shared the thematic presentation, where he mentioned that the government of Bangladesh has a commitment to establish green export programme and a hundred per cent LEED certification for strategic export industries by 2030.
He urged the international community to expand financial and technical cooperation for the implementation of just transition initiatives in Bangladesh.
The chair of the session Aminur Rashid Chowdhury Repon emphasised on comprehensive funding to create decent and quality jobs in climate change mitigation sectors that includes financing for workforce development and alternative livelihood management.
He underscored the need for funding social protection schemes for the workers and promotion of social dialogue at the national level with trade unions throughout the transition process.
Among others, Bert De Well, global climate policy coordinator, International Trade Union Confederation; Moustapha Kamal Gueye, director for Just Transition, ILO headquarters; Mandvi Kul Sherestha, senior programme adviser, FES India; Sari Sairanen of Unifor Canada and Jacqui MacLeod adviser for development, Just Transition Centre (JTC), Belgium addressed the event.
Besides, Sohanur Rahman, executive coordinator, Youth Net Global; gave a separate presentation on Bangladesh experience on Youth Engagement for Just Transition.
A total of 40 representatives from Bangladesh government, development partners, trade unions and civil society organisations attended the event.
