A fresher student of Jahangirnagar University was killed being hit by a battery-run auto-rickshaw on the campus on Tuesday evening.

The deceased — Afsana Rachi, 20, — was a first-year student of marketing department under the academic session of 2023-24.


Afsana is a native of Sherpur district.

Witnesses said that a speeding rickshaw hit Afsana while she was crossing the road adjacent to the university's central Shaheed Minar.

She was taken to the university's medical center by students and a physician there referred her to a private hospital in Savar at about 7:00pm for better treatment.

Quoting a duty doctor of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, JU proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said, 'Afsana breathed her last on the way to the hospital.'

JU vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan expressed condolence over the death of Afsana.

The VC also emphasised finding out the actual reason behind the accident and to take strict measures against unregistered vehicles inside the campus.
