
A court in Jhalakathi on Thursday sent a former Awami League lawmaker for the Jhalakathi-1 constituency, Barrister Shahjahan Omar, to jail in a case over vandalising the Kathalia unit office of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 2023.
Besides, a court in Dhaka on the day sent former senior secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Mohibul Haque to jail in a murder case.
United News of Bangladesh reported that Jhalakathi senior judicial magistrate Afroza Binte Shahid sent Shahjahan Omar to jail in the case of vandalising the BNP office in Kathalia.
Earlier in the day, local people assaulted Shahjahan, who had been in hiding since the fall of the AL government amid a student-mass uprising on August 5, when he was on his way back home.
Police arrested him when he went to Rajapur police station to file a complaint as unidentified miscreants reportedly attacked and vandalised his residence Wednesday night.
The agitated BNP leaders and activists gathered on the court premises and threw shoes and eggs at the former lawmaker.
Shahjahan contested the January 7 parliamentary elections with AL ticket after resigning from the BNP on November 30, 2023. He was a vice chairman of the BNP.
