A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Friday sent former Dhaka north city mayor Atiqul Islam to jail in a case filed with Uttara East police station over the murder of one Bokul Miah during the student-led mass uprising.

Besides, former superintendent of police Mohiuddin Farooqui of Betbunia Police Special Training School and additional superintendent of police Alep Uddin of Barisal Range were also sent to jail in a case filed over the murder of Zobayer Omar Khan in the capital鈥檚 Jatrabari area during the mass uprising.


Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mehedi Hasan ordered sending former DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam to jail as聽 police produced him before the court after end of his five-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind the bars.

Earlier, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury on November 13 placed Atiqul on a five-day remand for interrogation.

Police arrested the former DNCC mayor from the capital鈥檚 Mohakhali DOHS area on October 16.

According to the case documents, Bokul Miah joined the anti-discrimination movement on July 18 in Uttara East area. He was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries the next day.

Later his widow Monika Akter filed the case with Uttara East Police Station.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Afnan Somi sent SP Farooqui and ASP Alep Uddin to jail as police produced the duo before the court after the end of their two-day remand in the case and sought to keep them behind the bars till the end of probe.

SP Farooqui was placed on a two-day remand on November 13. ASP Alep Uddin was arrested from Barisal on November 13 and was placed on a two-day remand the next day.

According to the case documents, Zobayer Omar Khan on information of Hasina鈥檚 escape to India tried to join victory rally in Shahbagh at noon on August 5.

As he along with many others, reached Shanir Akhra area, police fired live bullets, tear gas shells and hurled sound grenades that left many people, including Zobayer injured.

As people rushed him to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, the attending doctors declared him dead.

Victim鈥檚 brother Zabed Imran Khan filed the case with Jatrabari Police Station on August 22 against 127, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
