Unidentified assailants hacked a man, believed to be a former leader of an extremist group, to death near Rauti Uttarpara School under Santhia upazila in Pabna Sunday night.

The deceased, Bakul Mia, 45, of Rauti village under the upazila, was leading a normal life for years after surrendering to the then home minister by taking the opportunity of the previous regime’s amnesty, the police said.

The victim’s nephew Alep Hossain, who was also injured in the incident, is now undergoing treatment.

With the latest incident, the district witnessed six incidents of murder in Pabna in the first 24 days of November this year.

The police and locals said that the assailants waylaid Bakul and Alep near the school at about 9:00pm when they were transporting paddy by a cart from a field to Raut village under Santhia upazila.

The assailants hacked them and left them in a pool of blood, they said.

They said that the locals rescued them and rushed them to Santhia Upazila Health Complex from where Bakul was shifted to Pabna General Hospital where he died.

Santhia police station officer-in-charge Saidur Rahman said that a case was lodged with his police station but none was arrested in this connection so far.
