A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent 18 individuals, including Mahbubul Alam Chowdhury, a senior joint secretary and one of the key leaders of the Ahingsa Gana-Abhyutthan Bangladesh allegedly for creating unrest by promising interest-free loans to villagers.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Monirul Islam issued the order after the investigation officer, sub-inspector Mahfuzur Rahman of the Shahbagh police station, requested the court to send them to jail.


The other accused sent to jail are lawyer Ziaur Rahman, Syed Istiak Ahmed, Mohammad Mehedi Hasan, Mohammad Rahat Imam Noman, the leader of Ahingsa Gana-Abhyutthan Bangladesh in Netrakona, Mohammad Masud, Ibrahim, Mohammad Alek Farazi, Mohammad Saiful Islam, Mohammad Abu Bakkar, Mohammad Rinku, Mohammad Nizam Uddin, Syed Harun Ar Rashid, Mohammad Afzal Mondol, Abdur Rahim, Nur Nabi, Mohammad Shahid, and Kohinoor Akter.

The main accused in the case and the convener of the organisation ABM Mustafa is undergoing treatment in police custody at a hospital.

Police filed a case against 1,219 individuals, including ABM Mostafa Amin, with Shahbagh police station.

Sub-inspector Harun-ur-Rashid lodged the case on Monday night against 19 named persons while 1,200 remain unidentified.

The case details allege that on November 25, the platform conspired to lure people to Dhaka from different districts with false promises of interest-free loans.

The platform was going to hold a big gathering on Monday in the city to create a chaotic situation as part of their plot against the interim government, according to law enforcement agencies.

Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansoor said that police arrested 19 people over the matter.
