A whale weighing about 50 maunds (1 maund equals 37.32kg) was released into the Meghna River on Thursday after it was washed ashore on the island of Hatiya in Noakhali.
Local people spotted the whale on a shoal near Char Ataur at the upazila in the morning.
Lieutenant Md Sabbir Ahmed, the media officer of the Coast Guard鈥檚 South Zone, said that the whale was alive but had some injuries near its tail.
He added that it was speculated that the whale became separated from its team and got trapped in the area early Thursday.
Later, a team from the Coast Guard released the whale into the deeper waters of the river.
