Ferry services on the Aricha-Kazirhat route in the Jamuna River and the Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River were suspended for around eight hours on Wednesday due to dense fog.
The dense fog that caused poor visibility also halted the movement of other vessels, including engine-run boats and launches, on the routes, leaving passengers, as well as vessel and transport workers, to suffer in the chilly weather.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation deputy general manager Nasir Mahmud Chowdhury said that dense fog blanketed the Aricha-Kazirhat route, prompting the suspension of ferry services on Aricha-Kazirhat route from 12:30am to 8:45am, and on the Paturia-Daulatdia route from 12:40am to 9:00am.
On the Aricha-Kazirhat route, three ferries鈥擲ha Ali, Chitra, and Dhanshiri鈥攚ere forced to anchor in the middle of the Jamuna River, while three others remained stranded at Aricha Terminal with vehicles and passengers due to the dense fog, the deputy general manager said.
Meanwhile, six ferries鈥擪eramath Ali, Bir Sreshtha Jahangir, Bir Shreshtha Matiur, Vasha Shaheed Barkat, Bagair, and Bonolota鈥攚ere stranded at Paturia Terminal, and four鈥擧asnahena, Shah Paran, Kumilla, and Golam Mawla鈥攚ere stuck at Daulatdia Terminal, he added.聽
Ferry Gauri was stranded in the middle of the Padma River with vehicles and passengers.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department鈥檚 forecast, commencing from 9:00am on Wednesday, moderate to thick fog may occur in parts of the northern and northeastern regions of the country, while light to moderate fog may appear elsewhere from late night to morning hours.
The BMD also forecast that the night temperature might drop by 1 to 2C, and the day temperature might fall slightly across the country.
