Jahangirnagar University students have issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding justice for those, including activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, responsible for attacks on their fellows during the July-August student-led mass uprising.
The students gathered at a human chain in the Shaheed Minar area on the university campus on Thursday afternoon, calling for legal action against the perpetrators of the assault.
The protest, organised under the banner of the ‘People’s Uprising Protection Movement’, also featured a march that ended in front of the university’s new administrative building.
Students from various departments participated in the demonstration, expressing their frustration over the lack of action from the university authorities after about four months.
Addressing the human chain, Abdur Rashid Jitu, a coordinator of the platform, said, ‘It has been four months since the July-August uprising, and we are still here demanding justice for the attackers.’
‘If legal action is not taken within the next seven days, we will be forced to escalate our protests. The attackers must be prosecuted before any academic activities can resume,’ Jitu said.
The speakers also spoke in support of boycotting teachers and students, who allegedly provoked or participated directly in attacks on protesters on July 15 on the campus.
They also vowed to stage a tougher movement if the administration would not comply with their demand.
