A youth who was active in the anti-discrimination movement was stabbed to death by miscreants in the Anandabazar area under the Bandar police station in Chattogram city on Tuesday night.

The incident stemmed from a dispute over the ownership of business of expired food collected from a garbage dump, according to local sources.

The deceased identified as Jasim Uddin, 25, son of Joynal Abedin, and hailed from Bhola district, resided at TC Colony of Anandabazar in the city.

The deceased’s father is a temporary worker in the cleaning department of the Chattogram City Corporation. Locals said that Jasim was associated with BNP politics and a follower of BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The victim came under attack at about 9:00pm near the City Corporation garbage depot in the TC Colony area of Anandabazar.

He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital, said Bandar police station officer-in-charge Kazi Sultan Mohammad Ahsan Uddin.

The deceased had been an active participant in the anti-discrimination student movement in Chattogram.

Sources said that Jasim collected expired and leftover food items discarded by various companies and resold them.

A long-standing conflict over this trade with a rival group is believed to have led to the fatal attack, they said.
