Ten people accused in the murder case of Chattogram court lawyer Saiful Islam Alif have been shown arrested in a case filed over vandalism and crude bomb explosions on the court premises.
Chattogram sixth metropolitan magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam passed the order on Wednesday morning after hearing a petition by the police, said Mofiz Uddin, additional deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
The murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif prompted his family to file two separate cases with the Kotwali police on November 29.
His father Jamal Uddin lodged a murder case, while his brother Khane Alam filed another case accusing the individuals of assault, vandalism, crude bomb explosions, and creating chaos on the court premises on the day of the murder.Â
‘These 10 people were already in jail in cases filed over murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif. Following the case filed by the murdered lawyer’s brother, Kotwali police submitted an application requesting to show these 10 persons arrested in the new case,’ ADC Mofiz Uddin said.Â
The accused are Chandan Das, Aman Das, Rumit Das, Nayan Das, Gagan Das, Bishal Das, Rajib Bhattacharya, Durlav Das, Sumit Das, and Sonu Das.Â
The 10 accused were brought to the court under tight security at around 8:00am on Wednesday. After the hearing, they were sent back to jail at about 8:45pm. All the accused are reportedly followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON organiser and spokesperson of Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote.
A total of six cases were filed so far over the incidents centring the lawyer murder near the court premises in Chattogram city.
Charges in these cases include, among others, obstructing government officers from performing duty and vandalism.
Of the six cases, three have been filed by the police, victim families filed two cases, and a businessman filed the rest one. Altogether 40 people have been arrested in connection with the killing of Saiful.
