A human chain and protest rally were held Friday afternoon at Mallikpur of Nachol upazila in Chapainawabganj, demanding justice for the murders of two youths, including a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist.
The two victims, Masud Rana and Mohammad Raihan, were stabbed to death during a Victory Day cultural programme earlier this week.
The human chain was formed at Mallikpur Bazar on the Chapainawabganj-Rohanpur road by relatives of the deceased.
Speakers at the protest rally included Ezabul Haque, father of Masud Rana, Abdur Rahim, father of Raihan, his brothers Jahangir Hossain and Akbar Hossain, and local union council member Afzal Hossain.
The speakers strongly condemned the double murder and demanded the immediate arrest and capital punishment of those responsible.
A large number of locals participated in the protest, which lasted from afternoon to evening. During the demonstration, agitated locals set fire to a wooden box on the road near the petrol pump in Mallikpur Bazar, causing a temporary halt to traffic on both sides of the road.
Nachol police station officer-in-charge Monirul Islam visited the scene and assured the protesters that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. Following his assurance, the protesters left the road at about 6:00pm.
The incident occurred Tuesday night during a cultural programme, organised by the local Shaheed Zia Smriti Sangha at Mallikpur Cow Market. A dispute between two groups escalated into a violent stabbing, leaving Masud and Raihan dead and four others injured.
