Information and broadcasting adviser Md Nahid Islam on Saturday said that an impression had developed that there was no justice if someone from the higher level of the society is involved in a road accident.

By giving the example of the recent fatal road accident involving three students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, he said, ‘There is a common notion that people who are involved in road accidents, if they belong to the upper class of the society, they will not be judged, will not be held accountable.’

As a result, ordinary people are losing their lives, he said, adding, ‘Common people are the worst sufferers of road accidents.’

‘We need to change this scenario,’ he said, adding, ‘whoever involved in the road crashes need to be brought to justice.’

Nahid was delivering his speech as the chief guest at a national dialogue titled ‘Reforms of institutional management and structure with an aim to establish order in the road transport sector’.

Protests erupted at BUET after a student of the university was killed and two other students were injured after being hit by a car in the early hours of Friday.

Police found a can of beer and an empty alcohol bottle inside the car which was being driven by the son of a former army officer.
